Introduction

Today, we're delving into the intriguing world of eschatology – the study of end times. Buckle up because it's a hot topic that has fascinated minds for centuries. Have you ever wondered about the rapture, the second coming of Christ, and the mysteries surrounding these events? Well, let's dive in and explore the depths of eschatology.

The Rapture Unveiled

Our journey begins with the concept of the rapture, a belief that traces its roots to the first-century church. Back then, there was a genuine conviction among believers that Jesus would return within their lifetimes. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians, describes the rapture as an event where the Lord descends from heaven with a loud command, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet call of God. This moment marks the gathering of the living and the resurrected dead to meet the Lord in the air. Noteworthy is the fact that during the rapture, Jesus does not set foot on Earth, distinguishing it from his second coming.

Navigating the Confusion

However, the waters of eschatology get muddied as some conflate the rapture with the second coming of Christ. To add to the complexity, there's a rising trend, particularly among younger generations, to reject rapture theology. Some argue that it's a modern church invention, barely two centuries old. Amid this confusion, it's crucial to distinguish between the two events and uphold the belief that the rapture is a real, impending occurrence.

When Will the Rapture Happen? Now, the million-dollar question: when will the rapture take place? Theologians have proposed three main positions – pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, and post-tribulation. Each position suggests a different timing of the rapture concerning the prophesied tribulation periods. The discussion becomes heated, often leading to divisive debates among believers.

Perspectives and Predictions

Our hosts Andrew and Jeff share their perspectives, with Andrew leaning toward a pre-tribulation stance. He acknowledges the difficulty in pinpointing the exact timing, emphasizing the need for readiness rather than fixating on specific predictions. The discussion prompts a reflection on the diverse beliefs within the Christian community and the importance of approaching these conversations with humility and unity.

Living in Anticipation

Amidst the uncertainties, one thing remains clear – Christians are called to live in anticipation of Christ's return. The hosts highlight the danger of getting caught up in useless arguments and emphasize the need to heed Jesus' command to occupy until He comes. This involves staying engaged with the world, influencing it positively, and being prepared for the unexpected return of Christ.

Preparing for the Unknown

As the conversation expands, the hosts touch on the potential turning away of Christians, known as apostasy, in the end times. They stress the gradual nature of this process and the importance of maintaining a vigilant and occupied life. The hosts encourage believers to focus on living a life of repentance, keeping their homes open to others, staying actively involved in the kingdom, and boldly speaking the truth in love.

The Climactic Finale

The podcast concludes with a glimpse into the climactic events following the rapture, including the thousand-year reign, the great white throne judgment, and the creation of a new heaven and earth. The hosts share their insights on ruling and reigning with Christ, and the importance of understanding love in the context of biblical truth.

Conclusion

In this whirlwind tour of eschatology, we've explored the intricacies of the rapture, the diverse perspectives within the Christian community, and the significance of living in anticipation of Christ's return. As we navigate the maze of end-time beliefs, let's keep our heads clear, our hearts clean, and our lives focused on occupying the world with love and truth. After all, the greatest command from Christ remains: "occupy until I come."

In recent discussions about the future of the United States, a prevalent viewpoint emerges – the nation's role in the end times. Many theologians and eschatologists suggest that the United States might not play a significant part in the final events foretold in the Bible. Amidst this speculation, the focus shifts towards the current state of the church, its challenges, and the potential repercussions for the nation.

The State of the Church: Apostasy and Division

When examining the condition of the church in the United States, concerns arise regarding the rising apostasy and internal divisions. Instances of churches dividing over issues like gender roles, as seen in the Southern Baptist Convention, raise questions about adherence to biblical principles. The historical role of the church as a moral compass for the nation is discussed, acknowledging imperfections but highlighting its influence in promoting Judeo-Christian values globally.

Apostasy and Cultural Shifts

The conversation delves into the challenges the church faces, including the acceptance of practices contrary to biblical teachings, such as ordaining homosexuals. The emergence of influential figures on social media platforms, shaping a narrative that redefines traditional views of God, is noted as a concerning trend. The overall decline in the church's influence, as evidenced by various studies, underscores the urgency of addressing these issues.

The Deterioration of American Values

The discussion expands beyond the church, addressing broader societal issues contributing to the perceived decline of the United States. Economic challenges, political corruption, and a growing culture of hatred and violence are identified as key factors. The deterioration of moral values is particularly emphasized, drawing attention to the shift away from Judeo-Christian principles that have historically shaped the nation.

Potential Scenarios: Civil Unrest and Division

The conversation takes a speculative turn, exploring potential future scenarios for the United States. The Andrew and Jeff consider the possibility of civil unrest or even a form of separation among states. The impact of weakened leadership, economic collapse, and external threats are discussed, leading to a contemplation of America's diminished influence on the global stage.

Responding with Faith and Hope

In the face of these challenges, the conversation pivots towards the response of Christians. Andrew and Jeff emphasize the importance of cultivating a deep and abiding faith now, rather than expecting it to materialize in moments of crisis. Drawing parallels to historical instances of the church thriving in adversity, they express optimism about the potential for miracles, bold evangelism, and the strengthening of believers' faith during challenging times.

The Call to Occupation

The narrative concludes with a call for Christians to occupy their roles as leaders, both within their homes and communities. The notion of clinging to life with the same vigor as clinging to Jesus is presented. Instead of fearing death, Christians are encouraged to embrace the opportunities for impactful evangelism that challenging times may present. The belief in the ultimate victory of the gospel, even in the face of potential martyrdom, becomes a focal point of hope and encouragement.

Introduction

Welcome back to another exciting episode of our podcast, "Beyond Sunday" Today, we're delving into the third installment, so if you missed the first two, make sure to catch up on those. We're about to embark on a journey exploring the depths of resisting the spirit of the antichrist in this era of spiritual warfare. We've previously touched on the importance of keeping oil in our lamps, and today, we're diving even deeper.

Understanding the Spiritual Battlefield

In our last conversation, we delved into eschatology, unraveling the biblical predictions about the end times. It's clear that we have a real adversary, and despite societal attempts to downplay it, the Bible unequivocally states that we are engaged in a spiritual battle. In 2 Peter chapter 2, the apostle Peter outlines the challenges Christians will face in the end times, emphasizing the rise of false prophets and the hardships ahead.

Facing the Unchanging Enemy

It's crucial to recognize that our approach to resisting the enemy doesn't change with the unfolding of these events. The enemy's power remains constant; it's the increasing wickedness of humanity that provides more fertile ground for spiritual warfare. Peter's advice is simple yet powerful: resist the adversary, and he will flee from you. The devil's power over believers is limited to what we allow him. As a church, we need to anchor ourselves in timeless principles that are just as relevant now as they will be in the future.

Developing a Spiritual Core

One key aspect of our spiritual foundation is the development of a robust devotional life. This isn't a drastic shift in response to impending challenges but a consistent, daily commitment to spending time with God beyond Sunday mornings. Think of it as building your spiritual core, the source of strength for your entire being. At Connection Point, we've initiated a 90-day challenge, encouraging believers to commit to daily devotions. Start with 15 minutes a day, gradually building a habit that strengthens your connection with God.

Tools for Devotional Growth

For those unsure about where to begin, numerous devotional tools are available, such as the "SOAP" method. Whether you're reading scripture, spending time in prayer, engaging in worship, or trying journaling, find what resonates with you. Journaling, in particular, helps capture your reflections on God's word, your prayers, and the thoughts you believe God is impressing upon you.

Fueling the Lamp: Keeping Oil in Your Spiritual Lamp

Transitioning into the parable of the ten virgins from Matthew 25, we learn a valuable lesson about the importance of keeping oil in our lamps. The lamp symbolizes our faith in Jesus, while the oil represents the Holy Spirit's power in our lives. Believing in Jesus is essential, but without the Holy Spirit, our faith lacks the necessary power. As the world becomes more confusing and the spirit of the antichrist distorts truth, relying on the Holy Spirit becomes imperative.

Avoiding Spiritual Isolation

In our current culture, the acceptance of isolation as a norm poses a significant threat to believers. The author of Hebrews admonishes us not to forsake gathering together. Isolation is not in God's plan for our lives. Despite the societal shifts post-COVID, it's crucial not to let isolation become a habit. The temptation to be a Sunday-only believer or to embrace isolation as a new normal can lead to spiritual peril.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the challenges we face in resisting the spirit of the age require a proactive and unwavering commitment to our faith. As believers, we must focus on developing a strong spiritual core through consistent devotional practices, ensuring that our lamps are filled with the Holy Spirit. Let's avoid the pitfalls of isolation and, instead, be active participants in the community of faith, supporting and uplifting one another in our spiritual journeys.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of "Beyond Sunday." If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or topics you'd like us to explore, feel free to leave a comment or reach out. Until next time, stay strong, stay connected, and keep the oil in your lamp burning bright!

Special Episode - Jim Walsh

Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of Beyond Sunday. I'm your host, Pastor Jeff Carlson from Connection Point Church, and today I have the extraordinary Pastor Jim Walsh with me.

We recently shared some exciting news a few weeks back – Pastor Jim and Robin are leading a team to the southeast side of Lafayette to plant a new church. Initially, it will be a campus of Connection Point Church, with Pastor Jim preaching live, just a genuine extension of our church to an area in need.

Jim, having been part of this church since 1993, serving in various roles shares a bit about his history here and the journey that led him to this new endeavor?

Jim reflects on the extensive time spent in youth ministry, starting at 15, and the evolution of his roles within the church. From youth pastor to worship team leader, his heart was always aligned with serving the church in whatever capacity necessary. He even humorously embraces the title of the "Swiss Army Knife" of the church, ready for any role.

The conversation shifts to the essence of community and why Lafayette has been home for Jim and Robin. The strong family values, work ethic, and optimistic mindset were attractive, especially when raising their kids. Jim emphasizes the impact of growing up in challenging circumstances, fostering compassion for the marginalized and forgotten.

Pastor Jeff delves into Jim's passion for outreach, a hallmark of his ministry. Jim traces it back to personal experiences, highlighting the importance of being aware of those usually overlooked. The conversation touches on the challenges of maintaining compassion, especially when others might not share the same values.

As the dialogue unfolds, the focus shifts to the decision to plant a new church now. Pastor Jeff prods Jim about the timing, considering his wealth of experience and the potential for pastoring earlier. Jim shares that it's about obedience, saying "yes" to God's leading, and recognizing the seasons of ministry.

Jim elaborates on the sense of urgency, emphasizing the need to multiply and extend the church's reach. The demographic growth in the community outpaces the church's ability to keep up, necessitating new plants. Both pastors express the belief that this is just the beginning of a series of church plants, acknowledging the potential for more.

Looking ahead, they outline plans for an information meeting on October 15th, inviting anyone interested in the new church plant to join. Additionally, they discuss a church planter training in Dallas and the strategy sessions planned for early next year. The goal is to officially launch the new church in September.

Pastor Jeff emphasizes the need for active participants, not just attendees, in this venture. He encourages those interested to attend the meeting, sign up on the church center app, and be part of a collective effort to reach new territories for God's kingdom.

As the conversation concludes, the excitement for this new chapter in the church's journey is palpable. It's not just about starting a new church but expanding the impact of the church collectively. The call to prayer, active involvement, and a sense of adventure underscore the journey ahead.

As the conversation concludes, the excitement for this new chapter in the church's journey is palpable. It's not just about starting a new church but expanding the impact of the church collectively. The call to prayer, active involvement, and a sense of adventure underscore the journey ahead.

Ep 04 - Prayer is our Priority

We're excited to dive into a topic that's been on our hearts lately—the importance of prayer. At Connection Point Church, we've made prayer a priority in our mission, and today, we want to share some thoughts on why prayer is not just a church thing but a personal journey that can transform our lives.

So, what is prayer? It's our priority. It's the timeless communication method rooted in Christianity and Judaism, dating all the way back to the Old Testament. It's not just about talking to God; it's about hearing from Him. In fact, Jesus himself emphasized the significance of prayer in the Lord's Prayer, where he prayed for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Why is prayer a priority? Without it, a church, a person, an individual might struggle to navigate life. It's the key to communication with God, filling our spiritual tanks and aligning our lives with His purpose. While other components of spirituality, like worship and reading the Word, are crucial, We've noticed a shift away from a prayer movement in the last 25 years.

Historically, revivals were birthed out of prayer, not worship or dynamic preaching. The Day of Pentecost, the original revival, started with a prayer meeting. Prayer needs to reclaim its place as the main spiritual priority in our lives for us to be fueled by the Holy Spirit, individually and corporately.

At Connection Point, we believe in the power of both corporate and individual prayer. We gather every Sunday for Passionate Core Prayer and have added a Tuesday morning session. However, the hope is that people engage in prayer on their own, mimicking the corporate experience in their personal lives.

It's not just a corporate deal for the church; it's a priority for individuals. We constantly feel the desire for a deeper and more robust prayer life, echoing Paul's words to pray without ceasing—an ongoing conversation with God as we navigate life's twists and turns.

Prayer is an action we choose, a pursuit that goes beyond mere requests. It's about seeking God's will and agreeing with Him, engaging in spiritual warfare through worship and intercession. While worship often reminds us of God's greatness, prayer takes us into a dynamic agreement with His promises.

In our culture, worship has taken center stage, but we need to restore the balance. We must move beyond Sunday and develop a devotional life, spending time with God throughout the week. This is the key to experiencing a dynamic and impactful worship service, where the Holy Spirit can move freely.

Prayer not only tenderizes our hearts but also aligns us with the Spirit's guidance. It goes beyond seeking answers from external sources and allows us direct access to the Father's heart. Our individual prayer lives significantly impact the collective experience in a church setting.

As we aim to be a church that prays, it's our prayer that this emphasis on seeking God in prayer would spill over into the lives of individuals. Let's challenge ourselves to go deeper in prayer this week and witness the Holy Spirit's transformative work in our lives.

Join us in the next episode as we continue our exploration of prayer, delving into how and why we conduct our Passionate Core Prayer sessions. Until then, keep seeking God in prayer, and let's see what amazing things He will unfold in our lives and our church.

Stay blessed

Ep 05 - Praying Prayer Models

Today, we're diving into a practice we hold dear at Connection Point – praying through prayer models.

So, let's talk a bit about the structure and the 'why' behind our corporate prayer time before services. The power of prayer models lies in addressing two common pitfalls in our prayer life. Firstly, a significant portion of our prayers tends to be petitionary, seeking things from God – healing, provision, restoration. While these are valid and biblical, relying solely on this approach may narrow our connection with God.

The second concern is the inconsistency in our prayer life. Many Christians engage in serious prayer primarily during crises, neglecting the daily communion we could have with God. The beauty of prayer models, especially those rooted in scripture, is their ability to guide us beyond personal agendas.

Consider the Old Testament era, where only certain individuals – the prophets, priests, and kings – had a direct connection with God. However, Jesus changed the game. Through His sacrifice, the curtain in the temple was torn, granting every believer direct access to God.

Despite this privilege, prayer, especially of the kingdom-focused variety, seems undervalued today. We're often caught up in petitionary prayers, focusing on personal needs and desires. While these are essential, they should complement, not dominate our prayer life.

The heart of a prayer model lies in a key element of the Lord's Prayer – "Your kingdom come, your will be done." Instead of dictating to God, we yield, aligning ourselves with His plans. It's about removing personal preferences, trusting God's higher and greater ways, as articulated in scripture.

As pastors, crafting prayer models for our congregation is about creating a space where personal agendas take a back seat. It's an intentional effort to let God's will and desires for our church and community come to the forefront.

Now, let's break down how we pray a model during our Sunday morning passionate core prayer. We start with the revelation phase, where we reflect on the scripture's revelation of God's character. For instance, Psalm 23 unveils God as our Shepherd, Provider, and Restorer.

Moving from revelation to request, we then turn these revelations into prayers. If God is our Provider, we ask for provision. If He is our Shepherd, we pray to be shepherd-able, to submit to His guidance and protection. The goal is to make our requests align with the revealed nature of God.

Here's a practical tip: the next time anxiety creeps in, pray Psalm 23. Thank God for being the restorer of your soul and specifically request Him to breathe fresh life into your weary spirit. It's a simple yet powerful way to anchor your prayer in scripture.

What's fascinating about prayer models is their universality. Scripture transcends time and space, making these prayers applicable globally. As we pray through Acts 19 in our local context, the model boils down to specific messages relevant to our church, revealing the prophetic voice of God.

Finally, prayer models work on three levels – individually, for your family, and for the broader mission or movement God has called you to. Whether personal challenges, family dynamics, or the broader vision of your life, these models provide a structured yet flexible approach to prayer.

In closing, let's embrace the challenge of praying, "Your kingdom come, your will be done." Whether during our Sunday morning gatherings or in your personal prayer time, let's shift from mere petition to yielding to God's will. As we pray in alignment with His revealed word, we find a profound connection that transcends our own agendas.

Feel free to join us on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. for passionate core prayer. Until then, keep praying with purpose and conviction.

Ep 06 - Prompting Prayer

Today, we're diving into a topic that's near and dear to our hearts: prompting prayer. You know those moments on Sundays when we gather to pray? Yep, those moments when we lead and prompt you to pray for specific things. It's not just about keeping things moving; it's about giving direction and purpose to our collective prayers.

Think about it - how many times have you attended a prayer meeting where everyone scattered to their own corner, turning it more into a devotional time than a unified prayer effort? We've all been there. That's where prompting prayer steps in. It sets the tone, provides direction, and ensures we all know where our prayers are headed, from praising God for revelations to seeking His guidance in our requests.

But why is this important? Well, let's explore nine powerful benefits of prompting prayer that go beyond just keeping the flow going.

Firstly, it gives direction and destination to our group prayer. We use prayer models to guide us through different aspects of prayer, ensuring we don't chase our own direction but stay unified in our prayers.

Next up, it powerfully unifies and focuses the entire group. Picture it like this - a focused prayer is like a laser cutting through steel. In the same way, unified prayers pack more power and anointing, allowing everyone to participate without running out of things to pray about.

Now, here's a gem - it fuels and energizes passion within the group. When we collectively pray with intensity and passion, it creates a rich environment for the Lord to move. It reveals the work of God and unifies our spirits in ways we might not even realize.

Ever thought about the prophetic dialogue between God, the leader, and the participants? Prompting prayer allows us to tap into the revealed prophetic revelation of God as we pray the Bible together. It's a partnership that echoes the dialogue of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, revealing the Father's will through us.

But there's more. It teaches practical and corporate theology of God. As we pray, we recognize the theological truths of God's nature and understand His character, making it more than just a spiritual exercise but a cognitive one as well.

Now, let's talk about boldness and confidence. Prompting prayer releases boldness and confidence, encouraging everyone to participate, regardless of their personality or prayer style. It builds faith and expands our prayer vocabulary.

And here's an interesting one - it softens self-consciousness. We want to create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable, regardless of their prayer style or background. So, if you're a bit hesitant, we encourage you to step out and participate.

Additionally, prompting prayer allows the opportunity for reflection. We pause, listen to the Holy Spirit, and reflect on what God might be saying to us as a group. It's a space for spiritual gifts to be tested and shared.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, it exposes spiritual pride. This can manifest in resisting a prompted prayer style or expecting others to pray a certain way. We believe in the diversity of prayer styles and that there's no one-size-fits-all approach.

So, there you have it - nine benefits of prompting prayer that go beyond the surface. We want to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable, unified, and empowered to connect with God in their unique way. Let's embrace the richness of diverse prayers and see the powerful impact it can have on our community.

We're on this journey together, and we can't wait to see where our collective prayers take us. Join us next time, and let's keep the conversation going!

Special Episode - ReMade

Hey there, welcome to the Beyond Sunday podcast! I'm Pastor Jeff, and I'm excited to share a special episode with you today. We had the privilege of hosting David and Amy, who run Remade, a business in India that invests in the lives of women. In the last couple of weeks, they shared their incredible journey with us on a Sunday, and it's truly a game-changer in India.

The Genesis of Remade

So, you might be wondering, how did this remarkable initiative begin? Well, it all started with Amy's frustration. In a culture where men interact with men and women with women, Amy found it challenging to connect with the women in the community. Through a series of events and divine intervention, Amy heard a simple yet profound word during prayer—Remade.

This word, a call from God, marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Amy realized it wasn't just the culture around her that needed remade; it was a personal call to self-discovery and transformation. It wasn't about changing the external circumstances but surrendering to God's plan for her life.

Surrendering to the Vision

Despite her initial confusion, Amy embraced the vision. She stepped out of her comfort zone, willing to learn a skill she had no prior interest in—sewing. This shift in perspective, from doing it "Amy's way" to allowing God to lead, set the stage for something beyond her imagination.

From Sewing Club to Business

What started as a humble sewing club idea quickly turned into a thriving business. Initially anticipating a small gathering, Amy was astonished when 25 women showed up on the first night. What seemed like a sewing club evolved into a business that provided economic opportunities for women who had never experienced financial independence.

Changing Lives Beyond Blankets

Remade not only empowers women economically but also transforms families and communities. In a male-dominated society, the business has given women a newfound sense of value. Their ability to contribute financially has elevated their status within their families and the community at large.

Expanding the Vision

Remade has grown beyond a single center. With a beacon of light in the community, they've expanded their reach to other rural areas where economic opportunities are scarce. The vision is not just about a business; it's about bringing hope, education, and empowerment to places that have known little of it.

How You Can Be a Part of the Journey

Now, you might be wondering, "How can I be a part of this incredible journey?" Well, Remade welcomes your support and involvement. You can follow them on social media at Remade India or visit their website, Remade India, to learn more. For inquiries, drop them an email at ethicallymade@remadeindia.com.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Remade is not just a business; it's a movement of hope and transformation. Your support goes beyond buying blankets; it contributes to changing lives, breaking societal norms, and bringing light to places that need it the most.

Thank you for joining us on this inspiring journey with Remade. Stay tuned for more stories of hope, transformation, and the incredible things that happen beyond Sunday!

Ep 07 - The Case Against Cessationism Part 1

Today, I've got Pastor Zach Rainey with me, a resident scholar with a passion for studying and a wealth of knowledge. We recently delved into the topic of spiritual gifts, inspired by a message I preached a couple of weeks ago about unity and finding our place in the body of Christ.

Our conversation took us to Ephesians 4, where Paul outlines the various gifts bestowed by the Lord, sparking an exploration into the spectrum of beliefs about the gifts of the Spirit. From what I've gathered, there's a wide range of perspectives, from those who condemn the gifts outright to those who zealously promote their unrestrained use.

Let's break it down.

1. Condemnation (Level 1)
Starting at the bottom of the spectrum, we have those who outright condemn any manifestation of the gifts. This extreme perspective often labels such acts as demonic, a sentiment Pastor Jeff encountered in his early church experience.

2. Rejection (Level 2)
Moving up, there are those who reject the idea of the church exercising the gifts. While they may not condemn those who operate in the gifts, they're uncomfortable with the idea and may even believe that these gifts no longer exist.

3. Discouragement (Level 3)
Level 3 brings us to those who seriously question the practice of spiritual gifts, discouraging any use of them. This group expresses skepticism and is hesitant to embrace the supernatural aspects of the gifts.

4. Neutrality (Level 4)
Next, we encounter individuals who claim neutrality but actually lean towards cessationism. While they may not have a strong opinion, they still believe that the gifts have ceased and prefer to remain on the sidelines of the debate.

5. Theoretical Belief (Level 5)
At Level 5, we find people who theoretically believe that the gifts are scriptural and could operate today but lack the desire to see them in action. They may not encourage the use of gifts but wouldn't necessarily condemn those who do.

6. Limited Tolerance (Level 6)
Moving into the continuationist perspective, Level 6 features individuals with limited tolerance for the practice of certain gifts. They might allow a restricted use of some gifts but remain cautious.

7. Expectation (Level 7)
Level 7 introduces a more positive outlook, where individuals expect and encourage a disciplined practice of the gifts of the Spirit. This may include allowing prophecy, words of knowledge, or healing in a controlled setting.

8. Zeal (Level 8)
Stepping into the realm of enthusiasm, Level 8 involves individuals who zealously promote a nearly unrestrained use of the gifts. These believers are eager to see the supernatural expressions of the Spirit in various forms.

9. Fanaticism (Level 9)
Level 9 takes us into the extreme territory of fanatical believers who want to incite normative and non-normative expressions of the Spirit. This could be positive or negative, depending on the individual's approach.

10. Error (Level 10)
Finally, at the top of the spectrum, we reach Level 10, characterized by error. Individuals at this level prioritize mystical revelations from the Holy Spirit over the written word, a perspective deemed dangerous by Pastor Jeff.

Church Position
Pastor Jeff reflects on where Connection Point Church might fall on this spectrum, estimating it to be around Level 8. He acknowledges the diversity within the church but emphasizes the importance of open conversations to foster understanding.

Addressing Cessationist Arguments
In the latter part of the discussion, Pastor Jeff tackles the cessationist argument that the miraculous gifts ceased with the death of the last Apostle. He challenges this view by highlighting instances in church history where supernatural occurrences persisted well beyond the apostolic era.

Looking Ahead
The conversation doesn't end here. In an upcoming session, Pastor Zach and Pastor Jeff plan to delve deeper into the cessationism debate, providing more insights and shedding light on common arguments and misconceptions.

Stay tuned for the next installment of our exploration into cessationism and the gifts of the Spirit. We hope this breakdown helps you navigate the spectrum of beliefs surrounding this intriguing and often debated topic. Until next time, keep seeking, keep learning, and keep growing in your journey of faith!

Ep 08 - The Case Against Cessationism Part 2

Welcome back to Beyond Sunday, the podcast from Connection Point Church. I'm Pastor Jeff Carlson, and I'm here with Pastor Zach Rainey. Today, we're delving into the topic of cessationism, building on our previous discussion about the oneness of the body of Christ.

In our last episode, we explored the arguments of cessationists, those who believe that the extraordinary gifts seen in the early church have ceased. If you missed that discussion, consider giving it a listen to better understand the context. Cessationism posits that the unique gifts displayed in the early church are no longer in operation today, and various reasons and evidences support this perspective.

Now, as continuationists, Pastor Zach and I stand on the belief that the gifts of the Spirit continue to manifest today. We envision a progression in believers, growing in their understanding and operation of these gifts as they deepen their connection with God over time.

One argument from cessationists suggests that the gifts were resident in the apostles, necessary for establishing the early church. However, we question how the work of God has continued for the past 1900 years, considering the remarkable impact we've witnessed, even through missionaries and believers outside the apostolic era.

Interestingly, we've observed that cessationism is often more prevalent in Western cultures, where comfort and wealth might influence a perception that the Holy Spirit's empowerment is unnecessary. Yet, in other parts of the world, believers facing persecution and adversity recognize their dependence on the supernatural power of God.

We shared personal stories of missionaries enduring attacks and hardships, highlighting the undeniable spiritual power with which they navigate challenging environments. These experiences challenge the notion that the gifts of the Spirit ceased with the apostles.

The conversation also touched on the cultural phenomenon of cessationism and its potential correlation with a lack of perceived need for the Holy Spirit in comfortable Western settings. When faced with difficulties, even in affluent societies, there's a natural inclination to seek supernatural intervention, showcasing the essential belief in God's power.

A notable point was raised regarding the fixation on speaking in tongues. We acknowledged that the phrase itself might be off-putting, leading to misconceptions. However, we emphasized that it's just one of the many gifts and should not overshadow the broader spectrum of spiritual gifts available to believers.

We explored the idea that abuse and misuse of spiritual gifts have impacted the perception of cessationists. Unhealthy practices, particularly in the realm of health, wealth, and prosperity teachings, distance individuals from the core message of the gospel. We acknowledged that these issues aren't exclusive to Pentecostals but emphasized the importance of maintaining biblical integrity in the pursuit of spiritual gifts.

The discussion also touched on the misconception that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a subsequent gift, following salvation. We clarified that while salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit occur simultaneously, the supernatural works of the Spirit, the gifts, are subsequent events that can enhance believers' lives and ministries.

In addressing the potential misuse of spiritual gifts, we stressed the importance of aligning any prophetic utterance with the authoritative nature of Scripture. The gifts should not be treated as equal to Scripture but should complement and reinforce biblical truths.

Lastly, we encouraged believers to embrace a humble and willing attitude towards the gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are freely given by God, and one's qualification is not based on merit but on a willingness to be used by God for His glory.

As we close this discussion, it's crucial to remember that the early church also faced challenges and abuses related to spiritual gifts. Acknowledging the human tendency to misinterpret and misuse these gifts, we urge believers to seek a balance that honors both biblical principles and the supernatural workings of the Holy Spirit.

If you're interested in exploring this topic further, we recommend checking out a paper titled "The Case Against Cessationism" from Southland Church. It provides a comprehensive overview of ten main arguments related to cessationism, offering valuable insights into the ongoing dialogue.

In conclusion, our hope is for believers to approach the gifts of the Spirit with a balanced perspective, rooted in scriptural truths and a genuine desire to be vessels used by God. Until next time, stay connected, stay rooted in the Word, and may the Holy Spirit continue to guide and empower you on your spiritual journey.

Ep 10 - Understanding Communion

Title: Understanding Communion: The Second Ordinance of the Church
Hosts: Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zach Rainey

Description:
In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastor Jeff, together with Pastor Zach Rainey, continues their exploration of the Assemblies of God's two ordinances of the church. Focusing on communion, they discuss its significance, origins, and practice within the Christian faith.

Key Points Discussed:

1. Definition and Distinction of Ordinances:
Ordinances, as explained by the hosts, are practices ordained by Jesus Christ in the scripture, not inventions of church tradition.
The concept of ordinances is contrasted with sacraments, which some churches believe carry God's grace, a belief not shared by the Assemblies of God.

2. The Practice of Communion:
Communion, observed monthly at Connection Point Church, originates from the Last Supper and the Jewish Passover.
The episode discusses how communion has evolved from a Jewish tradition, with Jesus as the fulfillment of the Passover.

3.Significance and Symbolism:
The bread in communion represents Jesus' body and the wine/grape juice symbolizes his blood.
The act of taking communion is a reminder and a celebration of Jesus' sacrifice and the atonement for sins.

4.Discussion on Transubstantiation:
The hosts address the concept of transubstantiation (the bread and wine becoming the literal body and blood of Christ), a belief held in the Roman Catholic tradition, but not within their own faith practice.

5. Personal Reflection and Examination:
The hosts emphasize the importance of self-examination and spiritual alignment before participating in communion.
They discuss Paul's instructions from 1 Corinthians 11 about receiving communion in a worthy manner, focusing on introspection and alignment with God's will.

6. Community Aspect of Communion:
Communion is not just a personal act but also a community-oriented one, emphasizing sharing and fellowship among believers.
They encourage practicing communion not only in church but also in smaller groups and families, reinforcing the communal aspect.

Conclusion:
The episode concludes with a reminder of the joy and gratitude that communion brings, celebrating Jesus' sacrifice and the forgiveness of sins. The hosts encourage listeners to participate in communion with an understanding of its deep spiritual significance and its role as an essential ordinance in the Christian faith.

Ep 11 - The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Title: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Understanding and Experiencing
Hosts: Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zach Rainey

Description:
In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zach Rainey delve into the topic of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, a fundamental doctrine in their church. They discuss its biblical foundations, significance, and the practical aspects of experiencing and living out this spiritual reality.

Key Points Discussed:

1. Biblical Foundation and Historical Context:
The hosts explore the scriptural basis for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, referencing Jesus’ teachings in John 14 and 16, and prophecies in Joel 2 and John 1:33.
The fulfillment of these prophecies is seen in Acts 2, marking the birth of the church and the Holy Spirit's outpouring.

2. Theological Perspectives:
Differentiation between 'Continuationism' and 'Cessationism' regarding the ongoing relevance of apostolic gifts.
Clarification on common misconceptions about the Assemblies of God's stance on salvation and speaking in tongues.

3. Being Filled with the Holy Spirit:

In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastors Jeff and Zach talk about how to process failure in a healthy way, what Scripture teaches about setbacks, and practical steps like journaling, worship, and serving others that can help us move forward. You’ll be reminded that God’s definition of success is often different from ours, and that His hand is still at work, even when things don’t go as planned.

Grief isn’t only about death, it’s any felt loss. In this conversation we unpack what grief can look like (anger, short fuse, sadness), why naming it matters, and practical, faith-centered ways to move forward: giving yourself permission to grieve, journaling and “honor stories,” marking losses with simple rituals, seeking wise counsel, and letting God lead you toward gratitude. We also look at Scripture’s view of grief (1 Thessalonians 4:13; Lamentations; Job) and share real stories, from adoption to job changes, that make space for both sorrow and hope.

Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zach dig into what Pentecostalism actually teaches about Spirit baptism, why it’s about empowerment and witness more than a “better self,” how it relates to the indwelling Spirit at salvation, and why Christians shouldn’t dismiss it because of loud extremes or bad examples. Honest, conversational, and biblical (with a nudge to read John 14–16), this episode clears up common misconceptions and invites listeners to consider the Holy Spirit’s role in everyday life.

They cover earthly vs. heavenly languages, why tongues are the initial evidence of Spirit baptism (not a salvation requirement), how praying in the Spirit brings unity and boldness, and the difference between a personal prayer language and public messages with interpretation. Real stories, Scripture (Acts, 1 Corinthians, Jude 20), and practical encouragement to pursue the Spirit’s work.

In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastors Jeff and Zach unpack what Jesus meant when He said “the kingdom of God is at hand.” They talk through the “now, but not yet” reality of the kingdom, why many Christians treat Jesus like He will be King someday instead of King today, and why real discipleship can’t be separated from obedience. The goal isn’t rule-following or coerced behavior, it’s developing a heart of honor that actually submits to the King and reflects His kingdom values in everyday life.

In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zack continue the Kingdom Gospel series by unpacking what it really means to say “Jesus is the Christ.” They walk through the meaning of Christ and Messiah, the evidence for Jesus as the promised King (Scripture, prophecy, eyewitness testimony, and history), and why the resurrection and the disciples’ transformation matter. Then they bring it home with the real implications, if Jesus is King, discipleship is obedience, lives change from the inside out, and the mission of God cannot stop with us.

Jesus died for all. Most Christians believe that. Few slow down to ask what it really means. In this episode of Beyond Sunday, Pastor Jeff and Pastor Zack unpack why Jesus had to die, how His sacrifice fulfills and replaces the old covenant, and why everything in the Kingdom hinges on His death and resurrection. More than forgiveness, His death transforms us, reshapes how we see people, and removes every excuse for prejudice, pride, and indifference. If Jesus died for everyone, it changes how we treat everyone.

In this final episode of the Kingdom Gospel Beyond Sunday series, the conversation centers on Jesus’ resurrection, not as a once-a-year Easter concept, but as a present reality that shapes everyday discipleship. The hosts explore the historical grounding of Jesus’ death, the faith dimension of the resurrection, and what it means to live with “the same power that raised Christ” at work in us. From forgiveness and resisting temptation to daily prayer and time with Jesus, this episode calls believers to recognize, rely on, and testify to resurrection power in ordinary life.
