Life in the Spirit

About a decade ago, there started to be widespread concern about character and integrity in leadership. These concerns intensified in 2023, with over 70% of Americans reporting a leadership crisis across government and business. But, it’s not just leadership. There are also increasing worries about a lack of integrity and trust in US society in general. Goodness seems to be on the wane. In an uncertain and complex world, the vacuum created by this crisis has been filled by a desire for power, and ‘winning’ our cultural battles.

But, the gospel is not just about power, but the power of good. Paul writes in Romans that the gospel is the power of God for salvation. Salvation is God’s great work of goodness in the world, reconciling people to himself, changing them to become people committed to living good lives, and bringing about a redeemed ‘good’ world through the power of the Spirit.

Galatians 5, shows us:
The importance of goodness
The shape of goodness
The power to become good

Easter 2026 at Redeemer Downtown

Join us this Easter 2026 for a powerful and thought-provoking service centered on the message, “What If There Had Been No Easter?”
Taught by Pete Nicholas, this special gathering will invite us to reflect deeply on the significance of the resurrection and what it means for faith, hope, and humanity. Through Scripture, storytelling, and honest exploration, Pete will guide us through the impact of Easter—not just as a historical moment, but as the turning point that reshapes everything we believe about life, death, and redemption.

This is more than a question—it’s an invitation to consider the weight of what was accomplished and the hope that still speaks today. What would remain if Easter had never happened? And what does it mean that it did?

Whether you are a longtime believer or simply curious, this service offers space for reflection, encouragement, and renewed perspective on the message at the heart of the Christian faith.

Come and experience Easter in a fresh way—centered on hope, meaning, and the transformative reality of the resurrection.

Is there meaning in the confusion?

“Like everyone else I, too, had set out to be remembered. I had wanted to create something permanent in my life - some proof that everything in its way mattered, that working hard mattered, that feeling things mattered, that even sadness and loss mattered, because it was all part of something that would live on.” (Susan Orlean, The New Yorker.)

If you’ve ever felt the weight of chasing meaning through accomplishments, possessions, or the approval of others, join us on Sunday, March 22, for Questioning Christianity Sunday at Redeemer Downtown. Together, we’ll pause, reflect, and explore a different path: discovering true purpose not in what we can achieve, but in the life, love, and grace offered through Christ. Come as you are, bring your questions, and experience a community seeking meaning in what really lasts.

This season, we’re exploring the fruit of the Spirit, focusing on one aspect each week. Today, we turn to love. In a world that often values power and winning, this passage invites us into a better way: discovering why love is necessary, what it truly looks like, and how it endures. In Jesus, we see perfect love, and through Him, we’re invited to grow into it together.

Jesus in Nazareth

As we begin 2026, we’re excited to start a new sermon series, Encountering Jesus. In the Gospels, people were often surprised by Jesus—his teaching, miracles, and compassion were unlike anything they expected.

Today, many assume they already know him or settle for a familiar, comfortable version. But in Luke chapters 4–7, we’re invited into real encounters with Jesus that reveal who he truly is: challenging, compassionate, and life-changing. Join us as we explore these passages together and encounter the real Jesus.

As we continue our journey of Encountering Jesus, we’ll reflect this week on what mattered to Him. We’ll look at how Jesus spoke with authority and acted with compassion when healing the sick and delivering people from unclean spirits all while choosing humility over fame. Though He could have sought recognition and power, Jesus chose a different path: the way of the cross.

As we dive deeper into our series Encountering Jesus, we step into a powerful moment where Jesus meets Simon (James and John too) right in the middle of their work. Though they were experienced fishermen, Jesus reshapes their understanding of what’s possible and invites them into something far greater than they imagined. In that moment, they begin to see both who Jesus truly is and who they are in light of him. It’s a story that speaks to all of us regardless of where we’re coming from. Let’s listen together for what the Spirit may be inviting us into today.

As we continue our sermon series, Encountering Jesus, we dive deeper into the heart of Jesus and His forgiveness as it relates to the Mosaic Law. Today, we’ll explore how sin separates us from God and from one another and the beautiful truth that Jesus meets us in our brokenness. As the true temple and the perfect sacrifice, He opens the way for us to be welcomed back, restored in our relationship with God and reconciled to each other.
