CTK Lord's Day Worship

At Christ the King, we believe that by faith and diligent labor, we can build a vibrant Christian community that reflects God's glory and values. Our commitment to faith is rooted in the understanding that it is a divine gift, enabling us to trust in Christ and actively engage in all aspects of life. We strive to create a culture that embodies biblical principles, shaping our community through our actions and interactions, as we recognize that faith without works is dead (James 2:26).

Our vision extends beyond the present; we aim to establish a lasting heritage for our children’s children. Grounded in covenant theology, we understand our responsibility to cultivate a legacy of faith that future generations can inherit. By fostering a robust Christian culture, we seek to ensure that the teachings of Scripture inform every facet of our lives, creating a legacy that honors God and blesses our children's children.

Passage: Esther 1:1–2

The Book of Esther reveals the hidden hand of God’s providence, working behind the scenes to preserve His people and fulfill His promises. Though His name is never mentioned, the sermon shows that Esther’s world—and ours—is governed by the same sovereign King, who turns apparent coincidences into kingdom victories.

Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1:46–56)

In the inaugural sermon of Christ the King Reformed Church, Derrick Taylor preaches on Mary’s Magnificat, the church’s first great Advent song, teaching believers to wait, hope, and sing as God fulfills ancient promises in Christ.

The sermon traces Mary’s humility, faith, and deep scriptural awareness, showing how she rejoices both in God’s personal kindness to her as a lowly servant and in His cosmic work of power, justice, and mercy that overturns the proud and exalts the humble. It emphasizes God’s covenant faithfulness from Abraham through the generations, culminating in the “fullness of time” when Christ is conceived in Mary’s womb.

Advent is framed as a season of deliberate, hopeful waiting that resists sentimental rush, calling Christians to imitate Mary: hear God’s Word, believe it, bear reproach if needed, and magnify the Lord in grateful, joyful song as heirs of the promises in Christ.

Preacher: Derrick Taylor
Title: Mary’s Magnificat
Main Passage: Luke 1:46–56

Zacharias’ Benedictus (Luke 1:57–80)

After 430 years of God’s apparent silence, the birth of John the Baptist announces that the covenant-keeping God has visited and redeemed His people. Zacharias’ “Benedictus” ties together Abraham, David, the Exodus, and the coming Christ, showing that Advent is not sentimental waiting but covenant anticipation. John is the forerunner sent “in the spirit and power of Elijah” to prepare the way, but Jesus is the true Dayspring from on high, shining light into the darkness and guiding our feet into the way of peace. Join us as we consider what it means to live as people who have been visited, redeemed, and sent as lights into the world.

On the night Jesus was born, God didn't send angels to palaces or temples—He sent them to ordinary shepherds working the night shift. Heaven broke into the darkness with news of great joy: "Unto you is born this day a Savior, which is Christ the Lord."

The shepherds didn't stay in the fields wondering. They ran to Bethlehem, saw the Christ, and couldn't stop talking about what God had done. Same work, same fields—but now their lives echoed the angels' song.

This Advent, God still comes to ordinary people in ordinary places with extraordinary news. Have you run to Christ? Are you joining the song?

Simeon's Nunc Dimittis (Luke 2:25–35)

Simeon's song "Now let depart" reveals the ultimate freedom of dying to self—a man so captivated by seeing God's salvation in the infant Christ that he can release his grip on life itself with perfect peace. This Advent sermon explores how true faith conquers not just the fear of death, but our desperate clinging to self-preservation, teaching us that when you have nothing to fear from death, the world has nothing left to threaten you with. The worst they can do is kill you, and for the believer who has held Christ in his arms, death is not loss but gain—not an ending, but a peaceful departure home.

This Christmas, we remember that Christ's birth reminds us that there is greater life in Him than in our old selves.

Christ: The New Song (Psalm 98)

God demands a new song not because He's chronologically needy, but because the Incarnation is so staggeringly excellent that our old hymns won't cut it—Christ Himself is the unwonted praise-song that warrants our most ardent attempts at worship, even though they'll all fall short.

This isn't about novel tunes or fresh sentiment; it's about hearts regenerated by sovereign grace finally able to sing what angels announced and creation groans for: God crashing into history as a baby to reclaim His world and crush the serpent's skull.

So sing, Christian—not because you're manufacturing religious feelings, but because the cosmic King has come, is reigning, and will return to finish what He started in that Bethlehem stable.

To properly build anything, the Church must be rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ, her Lord, and the people of God within a local church must be bought in—willing to move forward with the vision being set and trusting that this is God’s means to care for them and their posterity, not just the church’s ideas for the best ways to build a following, stay relevant, pay the bills, and so on.

What you build and how you build it matter to God. This is His house. So we must build with Him in mind, and we must build with His people in mind, since that is who He intends to serve.

So we must build, not with wood, hay, and stubble that won't withstand testing, but with gold, silver, and precious stones, works suited for the trying fire.

Is God really at work when powerful schemes make things seem upside down? In Esther 2, we see how God overturns wicked plans and uses messy situations through surprising instruments, such as vulnerable women in pagan courts. This pattern of ironic providence reveals how enemy schemes backfire and God flips the script against stacked odds.

10th Commandment — Law Homily

This Sunday we concluded our first walk through the Ten Commandments by examining what may be the most penetrating of them all: "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house... nor any thing that is thy neighbour's" (Exodus 20:17).

While the first nine commandments deal primarily with outward actions, this final commandment goes straight to our inner life. As the Apostle Paul testified in Romans 7, it was this very commandment that exposed the depth of his sin — showing that sin isn't just about what we do, but about what we desire.

This teaching explores how coveting manifests in everyday Christian life — in our marriages, parenting, careers, and especially in our social-media saturated culture. We examine why coveting is not merely a feeling but a sin against God's sovereignty and goodness, and how the gospel provides the only true answer: Learning to treasure Christ above all else and finding contentment in what God has given us.

Series: Law Homilies

Mordecai saved the king's life one day, but refused to bow to evil the next. That's not contradiction — that's wisdom. Biblical faithfulness means knowing when to honor authority and when to resist it. When doing right seems costly, remember: God sees, records, and will vindicate.

The Fights of Our Fathers (Esther 3:1–4)

Every generation inherits a battlefield. Will we fight with faith, or follow the failures of those before us? In Esther 3, what looks like a petty court conflict is actually cosmic warfare—the ancient enmity between God's people and His enemies resurfaces when Haman the Agagite rises to power. Centuries earlier, King Saul spared Agag in half-hearted obedience, and now his descendants face the consequences.

Our compromises today echo into our children's lives. But here's the good news: the serpent has been crushed at Calvary. Christ has already won the decisive victory, so we don't fight for victory—we fight from victory. Your fathers sacrificed greatly for you, and Jesus Christ died freely for you. Now walk worthy of the gospel He won. Let your manner of life honor what was purchased at such a price.

2nd Commandment — Law Homily

The Second Commandment charges us not only to flee obvious idols but also to guard against every corruption of God’s appointed worship. It reveals how God jealously opposes false religion and appoints officers to maintain purity and discipline in His house. Furthermore, it binds His people to tear down monuments of idolatry, submit to lawful shepherds, and seek a congregation where Word, sacrament, and discipline are ordered by Scripture alone.

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." — Exodus 20:4–6

Pride is never satisfied. In Esther 3, Haman couldn't tolerate one man's refusal to bow—so he plotted genocide against an entire people. But here's the irony: the very lots he cast to time Jewish destruction gave God 11 months to orchestrate their deliverance. When evil seems to be winning, Christians know that God is working for their good.

Vows of Vanity (3rd Commandment) — Law Homily

Taking the Lord’s name in vain reaches far beyond casual profanity to include vows, promises, and spiritual speech that treat God as light, distant, or a tool for our own purposes. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 5, the message exposes the danger of “vows of vanity” in worship, church membership, marriage, parenting, and crisis prayers—words that sound pious but are careless, manipulative, or quickly forgotten. In light of the perfect obedience of Christ, who never took His Father’s name in vain and kept covenant perfectly for covenant‑breakers, God’s people are called to reverent speech, sober promises, faithful follow‑through, and honest repentance.

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." — Exodus 20:7

God prepares His people in secret and calls them to act in public. In Esther 5, the king's sceptre is extended not because Esther was fearless, but because the Lord governs even the eyes and hand of a pagan king. His providence works on the hinges between days — and pride, for all its schemes, can only build the instrument of its own destruction.

Look to the Ant (Proverbs 6:6–11)

Proverbs 6:6–11 invites you to look closely at one of God’s smallest teachers: the ant. This tiny creature is used to expose our laziness, model quiet diligence, and point us toward a life of wise, God-honoring work. Learn what it means to prepare in season, to labor without applause, and to see daily tasks as service to the Lord rather than mere survival. If you’ve ever felt stuck in apathy, distracted by comfort, or convicted about how time is used, this passage—and the ant—has something to say.

This law homily exposes the small seeds of unfaithfulness that grow into even greater sin, calling us to honestly examine ourselves. But don’t forget to lift up your head, there's mercy waiting.

The Death of Death

In Esther 7, Haman's gallows were built to end God's people. Instead, they ended Haman. Two thousand years ago, the same reversal happened at Calvary: what the enemy meant for destruction, God meant for redemption. Christ became the curse, bore the wrath, and walked out of the grave — so that death has nowhere left to go.

The tomb is empty. Victory is certain. He is risen.

Guarding Reputations (9th Commandment) — Law Homily

Guarding Reputations

The 9th Commandment calls us to love our neighbor by guarding their name: don’t slander, gossip, spread baseless accusations, or speak with certainty when you don’t have evidence. Ask the simple question: Would I want someone to speak about me the way I’m speaking about them?

And take heart—Jesus Christ was condemned by false witnesses and bore our curse at the cross, so we can repent, be forgiven, and learn to become people who speak truth and protect one another for God’s glory and our good.

The Sin Beneath the Sin (Tenth Commandment) — Law Homily

This law homily frames the tenth commandment as targeting “the sin beneath the sin”: coveting is a restless, inward refusal to trust God’s wise providence, and it becomes the seedbed of many other sins—making it impossible to truly honor God and love neighbor.

It illustrates coveting through Ahab (who, despite having a kingdom, becomes “heavy and displeased” over Naboth’s vineyard) and Haman (who finds all his honors meaningless because Mordecai won’t bow), showing that coveting can be desire for things or for glory/control. The homily stresses that coveting never stays private; it bears deadly fruit in relationships, communities, and nations.

Positively, the commandment calls Christians to contentment, charity, and quietness of spirit, and it offers pointed applications: name coveting honestly, refuse comparison, practice gratitude and generosity as “warfare,” and repent of entitlement. The hope of the gospel is that Christ did not covet, and Christ died even for the coveting heart—so believers can bring their discontent to Christ and learn to say in sincerity, “The Lord is my Shepherd; I lack nothing.”

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” — Exodus 20:17

The Beginning of Judgment (Esther 7) — Esther: The Invisible Hand of Providence

This sermon on Esther 7 illustrates how God delivers His people through often unseen yet purposeful providence, emphasizing that even when evil seems entrenched, God is actively working for a decisive reversal. It highlights five key moments: the king's question encourages bold prayer and action; Esther's plea showcases her solidarity with her people and contrasts fatalism with the belief that God uses means; the exposure of Haman reveals how evil falters in the light; Haman's desperate plea underscores the distinction between worldly sorrow and true repentance; and the climax of Haman's execution serves as a reminder that the wicked's schemes ultimately lead to their downfall, reinforcing the idea that God judges in His timing. The sermon connects these themes to Christ, portraying the cross as the ultimate reversal where apparent defeat became the foundation for salvation and judgment against evil, urging Christians to live with confidence and joy in God's faithful purpose.

Trusting & Delighting in Our God (1st Commandment) — Law Homily

The homily exhorts the congregation to approach the First Commandment (“You shall have no other gods before me”) as a positive call to center the whole heart on the living God—not merely avoiding idols. It describes the duties required as believing, trusting, hoping, delighting, and rejoicing in God, and warns that idolatry often shows up as inward loyalties like control, approval, comfort, reputation, or self-security.

It then presses practical self-examination: when fear and uncertainty come, will we run to control and despair, or rest in God’s promises with joyful confidence? The homily calls Christians to be a joyful people now (not only someday in the fuller kingdom), and invites the congregation to kneel in confession—asking God to forgive their misplaced trusts and restore “the joy of Your salvation”—before standing to hear assurance of pardon from Psalm 23:3.

“And God spake all these words, saying, ² I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. ³ Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
— Exodus 20:1-3

From Curse to Covenant (2nd Commandment) — Law Homily

This homily explores the Second Commandment and what it means to worship God rightly. It examines both the restrictions and duties of biblical worship, revealing how acts of worship profoundly affect not only individuals but their children and grandchildren. Discover why God cares so deeply about how He is approached, why cultural religious practices and worldly substitutes cannot replace biblical worship, and how the simplicity of God's covenantal means of grace are far more powerful than human ingenuity. Learn how the curse of false worship is reversed through Christ's work and new covenant, bringing generational blessing to all who love Him and keep His commandments.

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. ⁵Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; ⁶And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
—Exodus 20:4-6 (KJV)

Right Hand Man (Esther 8) — Esther: The Invisible Hand of Providence

The signet ring of history is not on the finger of Caesar — it is on the hand of Jesus Christ." Esther 8 shows God's reversals are swift: the enemy overthrown, the righteous elevated, and the decree of deliverance sent to every province. Mordecai's exaltation from sackcloth to royal apparel foreshadows Christ's enthronement — already seated, already reigning, far above every power (Eph. 1:20–23), and bringing joy to His people. The Church doesn't wait for Christ to win; we live under the reign of One who already has.

The Shame of Blasphemies (3rd Commandment) — Law Homily

This week’s Law Homily returns to the Third Commandment (Ex. 20:7) and presses the question: where are we tempted to be ashamed of God’s truth, grace, and ways?

In a culture that rewards apology and compromise, the warning still stands—God “will not hold him guiltless” who takes His name in vain. That sin isn’t only loud blasphemy; it can be the quieter posture of explaining away Scripture, softening hard edges, or living in ways that make us a shame to the truth we confess.

The call is clear: don’t apologize for what God has said and done. Repent where fear of man has shaped obedience, pray for Christ’s Church to recover courage, and remember the gospel: Christ’s perfect obedience is credited to sinners by grace, so we can pursue joyful obedience without shame.

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
— Exodus 20:7

The Church Age (Esther 9:1–19) — Esther: The Invisible Hand of Providence

In Esther 9, what was decreed for the destruction of God's people became the occasion of their total deliverance. Not because of human strategy, but because God exalted His anointed and put the fear of His name before kings, rulers, and entire provinces. God's counter-decree answered the decree of death — and it always does. Christ is the greater Mordecai — who waxes greater and greater, whose kingdom has no end, and who brings all of history to its appointed feast.

Filling the Lord's Day (4th Commandment) — Law Homily

Honoring the Lord’s Day is a gift and a freedom for the people of God, given for us. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

In this homily, we consider where we may have omitted the duties required in the fourth commandment, where we’ve been “careless, negligent, or unprofitable in the performing of them, or grown weary of them.” And in our confession, we look to Christ to strengthen us in faith to joyfully trust Him and His good gifts to us.

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. ⁹ Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: ¹⁰ But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: ¹¹ For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." — Exodus 20:8-11

Sermon on Exodus 2

This sermon on Exodus 2 unfolds the story of Moses’ birth and early years as a vivid display of the providence of God, who quietly orders every detail—even a desperate mother’s plan, a baby’s basket on the Nile, and the compassion of a pagan princess—to accomplish his saving purposes. Rather than focusing on human heroism, the message presses us to see how the Lord is at work precisely when his people feel most helpless and hidden, inviting us to trust that his timing is never late and his hand is never absent. As Moses is preserved, protected, and prepared in ways no one could have scripted, we are called to rest in the same covenant God, learning to entrust our fears, delays, and unmet expectations to the wise and fatherly providence that governs all things for the good of those who belong to Christ.

Guest Preacher: Garrett Soucy
Main Passage: Exodus 2

“Honor thy father and thy mother” reaches further than the home: it speaks to every place of authority God appoints. This Lord’s Day we considered the weight of leadership—how superiors can sin by neglecting their duties, using authority for themselves, provoking others unjustly, or modeling evil. The comfort is this: Jesus Christ is the perfectly faithful Superior, who leads with truth and gentleness and calls us to steward authority for the good of those entrusted to us.
